Password locked iPhone security bug fixed in iOS 4.2 beta

by Justin Horn on Oct 25th, 2010 @ 4:16 pm

The bug shown in the video below that allows someone to make non-emergency calls and view contacts (even send an email as pointed out by macstories), on a password locked iPhones is already fixed in iOS 4.2 beta. When trying to reproduce the error with iOS 4.2, the phone just locks and doesn’t allow any calls. The good thing is even though this is a pretty big hole, and attacker still can not gain access to your home screen. So I wouldn’t freak out too much, especially with the fix being released in the next month.

Bed intruder guy, now iPhone app pitchman

by admin on Oct 25th, 2010 @ 12:06 pm

You’ll remember Antoine Dodson from the “Bed Intruder” song. Since then he’s had the interview autotuned and put on the iTunes store. Now he got another gig, becoming the pitchman for the Sex Offender Tracker app [iTunes link]. Glad his sister was only an attempted rape victim or else the whole Antoine story would not be quite as funny.

square fixes reader problem with iPhone 4

by Chiyin on Oct 22nd, 2010 @ 11:58 am

Just a week after receiving the original Square reader I received a new one that addresses some issues people were having using the reader with the iPhone 4. Although I didn’t experience any problem with the reader, some users were having issues, most likely because the original reader’s input jack is all metal and it was making a connection to the antenna. The new reader is a bit slimmer and the input jack ends in plastic, which is what I think will fix the problem of the metal to metal connection.

I’m glad to see a company that responds this quickly to address issues and problems their users are experiencing.  Keep up the good work Square.

More details on the Atomic Tom, iPhone only, music video on the NYC subway

by Justin Horn on Oct 21st, 2010 @ 8:05 pm

About a week Atomic Tom released a YouTube video of them playing on a NYC subway, with only their iPhones. They had a quick segment on E! News tonight and it turns out it was a real performance, not faked as some internet haters had suggested. It took them about a month of practice to get it just right. As to the back story of their instruments being stolen…that wasn’t true, just a clever story to go along with the music video.

Here’s the E! News clip:

(If using FireFox or IE8 (or earlier), you may need to let the entire video load before it begins playing)

So I forgot there was an Apple Mac event today

by Justin Horn on Oct 20th, 2010 @ 10:21 am

I didn’t forget the “Back to Mac” all together, but had no idea it was today. I’m sure most Apple bloggers remember when events are coming up, but for some reason it just slipped my mind until my fellow When Will Apple writer Chiyin reminded me. I understand this is just my personal experience, but I think it’s indicative of where technology is moving. Mac is the past, iOS is the future.

I remember reading many years ago that the desktops days were numbered and laptops were the future, which the numbers later backed up. Now it seems it’s happening all over again, but this time moving from “bulky” laptops, like the MacBook Air,  to smaller tablet devices, like the iPad. I believe Apple is in the strongest position in this new market, even more so then they are with the traditional laptop market, and that’s got a lot of other companies scrambling to exist in this new future.
