App Review: CleverMedia’s Free Style

Basically it’s a puzzle game where you move your game piece over red tiles and turn them green. You do this for each row while avoiding the X (landing on X ends the game) which moves around on the row randomly. Once you have no red tiles left you navigate your way to the passage to the next row. The puzzle itself isn’t all that challenging…it’s more of just moving back and forth and making sure not to move to a spot if there is an X on it. I think the game would draw me in more if the puzzle was less random and more pattern based to make more educated moves…maybe there is, but I don’t see it.

If you are looking for a quick game to kill some time it fits the bill, but it’s not as engaging as some other puzzle games. I couldn’t see myself sitting down and playing this for hours on end, but as this game is rated 4+ and has the fun music aspect I do think a younger audience may enjoy playing it more than I did.

Apple releases iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 3, then takes it down

Guess someone jumped the gun at Apple when they put beta 3 up as it was taken down (back to beta 2) shortly thereafter.  Hopefully that means there is some more interesting tidbits in here they didn’t want developers to see yet. Guess we should know soon enough.

AT&T starting to look better, SlingPlayer going 3G soon

says...
on Feb 4th, 2010 @ 9:36 am

We recently got some 3G VOIP love from AT&T now that Apple’s terms have caught up to AT&T giving the all clear last year. Now AT&T has taken the next big step in allowing the SlingPlayer iPhone app to stream over 3g. According to Engadget:

AT&T says it has been testing an “optimized” version of the app on its 3G network since December, and Sling says the dynamic bandwidth adjustment should keep the app from bringing the network to grinding halt — in not so many words. The 3G-friendly version will be a free upgrade to the $30 application, and should be available as soon as the revised software makes its way through the App Store approval process.

Looks like AT&T is feeling more secure as they start rolling out their 7.2 network this year.

Skype provides an excuse for the delay of the 3G capable iPhone app

says...
on Feb 3rd, 2010 @ 6:12 pm

As you know we just reported a week ago about Apple finally updating the developer agreement to allow 3G VOIP calls. A couple of apps have come out of the gate already with this feature, but everyone is really waiting for Skype to update their app. Today Skype has finally confirmed they are going to release it “soon”:

Many of you have been asking when we’ll release a version of Skype for iPhone which supports 3G calling. Well, the simple answer is soon.

My problem with this is they have been saying they’ve had the 3G version ready to go for a while now and were just waiting for Apple. Seems like they might not have been the full truth as they provide this excuse for the delay:

You may have seen other apps offering calls over 3G, but we’re holding ours back for a little bit longer. Why? So that we can give you the very best audio quality we can. When our 3G-capable Skype for iPhone app is released, it’ll let you make calls in wideband audio, giving you greater clarity and fidelity – because that’s what you expect from Skype.

Either way let’s just hope soon actually means soon.

Oh, and you can check video from Skype explaining the process of bring 3G to the app
