google maps puts on its walking shoes!

UPDATE 10/25/08 Guess I was just a bit early with this guess as it is now being included in the 2.2 firmware!

Well I just checked out google maps on my PC and noticed something new today. You can select driving direction as always, but now you can also select public transportation and walking directions!!!

I find this interesting enough to put on an apple blog site becuase of the new kick ass GPS on the 3g iPhone. If apple is smart they will include this new update for google maps into their google maps app on the iPhone…maybe in 2.1 firmware update? This would be great for getting walking directions in lots of places, especially places like NYC which have a lot of one way streets and such. Even though you can figure out how to get somewhere on foot based on the driving directions, how cool would it be to have an estimated walking time and a nice purple line on the map to walk along to your next destination?

This has been on the (Google-authored) Google Maps for Mobile apps for Blackberry, Windows Mobile, J2ME, etc. for months. Just like the cell-based approximate location service they added last fall to much fanfare, Google had it on *other* (often dumber) platforms months before.

Frustrating, given how great the phone is in most other respects. If only Google could just provide a more up-to-date GMM for iPhone through the app store without ruffling Apple’s feathers.
