HTC Hero is here to save Andriod… I mean the day…

by Chiyin on Jun 24th, 2009 @ 1:45 pm

HTC Hero White

At an event in London today HTC announced their newest Android phone, the HTC Hero. Comparing it with T-Mobile’s myTouch, aka HTC Magic, this one looks much better. The phone will be available in Europe and Asia this summer and later this year in the USA. So it seems like there will be 2 new Android phones by the end of the year. Will the Hero be the Android’s savior? Or will the Magic save it? Will either of these phone herald in the era of the Google phone that the G1 failed to achieve last year? We will see.

One more thing… What’s up with that curve at the bottom of all these phones?

T-Mobile to release the myPod… I mean myTouch 3G in august

by Chiyin on Jun 22nd, 2009 @ 10:35 pm

myTouch 3G

T-Mobile is getting ready to release its second Android phone in August. The name of the phone? myTouch 3G, which reminds me of the myPod Lisa wanted from the Mapple Store in that episode of The Simpsons. Yes, I’m a dork…

The phone is actually the HTC Magic which has been available in Europe for a few months now, but T-Mobile’s offering will come with the option for users to customize the menu and buttons with themes. This time around HTC opted to go with an on-screen keyboard instead of a physical one, which makes it more like the JebusPhone… But not quite…

Techcrunch has an indepth look at the myTouch 3G.

A2DP bluetooth on iPhone 3G S works great, 3G not so much

by Justin Horn on Jun 21st, 2009 @ 6:42 pm

If you read my last post on A2DP you know that I got excited when 3.0 beta 5 seemed to fix the A2DP issues I was having on my iPhone 3G, but with further testing I found that it was only mostly fixed. When just walking around casually my S9-HDs sounded great, but when I tried to jogging the audio would start to cut out as it did before. Even though it still broke up beta 5 did make it happen a lot less often making it usable, but still quite annoying and far from a finished Apple solution. I speculated on a possible reason for the issue in the comments of this same post:

Also, my update on 5.16.09 still stands with the 3.0 GM. It works and sounds great, but when running with the iPhone in my pocket or hand it does break up every once in a while. My thinking is the CPU can barely handle the iPod and Bluetooth at the same time, so when you start moving the iPhone around it has to track the accelerometer movements and puts it over the top.

I just completed my “jog test” with my new iPhone 3G S an no matter what I did I was unable to get it to break up at all! So it seems my speculation might have been right as both the 3G and 3G S sport the same bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. The only other 3G S upgrade I could see affecting bluetooth would be the extra CPU power and possibly the extra RAM.  Glad my investment in the bluetooth headphones has not gone to waste. One small disappointment still stands though, even on the 3G S I was still only control pause/play with the S9-HDs (volume is controlled on the headsets themselves). So if you are planning on using A2DP headphones with an iPhone 3G on 3.0 I obviously cannot recommend the S9-HDs, but if you do find a pair that work nicely on the iPhone 3G please leaves us a comment or send us an email to let us know!

Also, up until this point I have been using the S9-HDs to test the iPhone A2DP functionality, but now that we are out of beta and they are working well on the 3G S I will be writing a proper review for them in the future.

iPhone 3G S taken apart reveals underclocked CPU

by Chiyin on Jun 20th, 2009 @ 11:20 am

Bits and Pieces

Two gadgets repair companies, iFixit and Rapid Repair, have taken the task to break apart the brand new iPhone 3G S and reveal what’s tucked inside its shiny exterior. Their findings? Most everything looks the same with the exception of bigger memory chips (in the case of 32GB model) and the faster CPU.

Logic Board

Previous iPhone models used the Samsung S3C6400 CPU, the new 3G S uses a Samsung S5PC100 running at 600MHz. Technical specs from the manufacturer indicates that the chip native speed is 667MHz and it can run up to 833MHz, which means that Apple is underclocking the processor, probably to conserve battery efficiency. Another interesting tibid about the chip is that it has built in 720p video capability.

So the “S” does stands for speed, even if it’s underclocked and HD video on the iPhone? Maybe when the Zune HD comes out? We can all hope…

iPhone 3GS launch: Apple Store Miami Beach

by Justin Horn on Jun 19th, 2009 @ 7:22 pm

The When Will Apple crew headed down to the Miami Beach Apple Store located on world famous Lincoln Road to cover the iPhone 3G S launch (and pick up the new phone for ourselves of course). Even though this launch wasn’t as big as the iPhone 3G (read more about last years launch) due to preorders, best buy, and walmart, it was still an interesting one…as almost anything on South Beach is (especially after 2am). Fun stories, pictures, and videos await your below…so let’s get started!
