Bits and Pieces

Two gadgets repair companies, iFixit and Rapid Repair, have taken the task to break apart the brand new iPhone 3G S and reveal what’s tucked inside its shiny exterior. Their findings? Most everything looks the same with the exception of bigger memory chips (in the case of 32GB model) and the faster CPU.

Logic Board

Previous iPhone models used the Samsung S3C6400 CPU, the new 3G S uses a Samsung S5PC100 running at 600MHz. Technical specs from the manufacturer indicates that the chip native speed is 667MHz and it can run up to 833MHz, which means that Apple is underclocking the processor, probably to conserve battery efficiency. Another interesting tibid about the chip is that it has built in 720p video capability.

So the “S” does stands for speed, even if it’s underclocked and HD video on the iPhone? Maybe when the Zune HD comes out? We can all hope…
