att free iPhone wifi, that took like 33 seconds

by Justin Horn on Oct 31st, 2008 @ 1:36 am

I’ve heard some people say it’s a pain and all, but honestly for free wifi at a decent speed it isn’t bad at all. I have the full lazy blog guide (aka pics) to the process after the break. The timestamps show the progress, but I didn’t think to show a connected screen shot (google) until a couple mins later. (continue reading…)

att offers free wifi access to iPhone users

by Chiyin on Oct 30th, 2008 @ 10:56 am

If you are an iPhone user in the US, you probably received a text message yesterday informing that attwifi is available for free to all iPhone users at thousands of locations. There were rumors about this a few months ago just before the launch of the new phone. Back then the reason for giving free wifi access was to take a load off the EDGE network, which is probably why the rumor didn’t come true, people migrated to new phone and took off the load that the wifi was supposed to take care of. However it seems that now the 3G network might be going through a similar situation. Could this be att way’s of handling too many people using their 3G network? It’s also interesting they are doing this now when they are about to launch the new Blackberry Bold… Thoughts anyone?

Here is a screenshot of the text message…

Does NBC’s Chuck have a 1st gen or 3g iPhone?

by Justin Horn on Oct 29th, 2008 @ 12:26 am

UPDATE
Apparently he doesn’t have 3g. In the end of the latest episode, which aired 2 weeks after he was seen sporting the 3g  not, he can be seen with a first gen sneakily wrapped in a black case.

Well it has always looked, at least to me, like Chuck has a 1st gen iPhone. Sometimes it was harder to tell because of the various cases on the phone, but pretty sure it was 1st gen. In the last episode, the one where Morgan rips on the Zune, Chuck starts out the episode with a 1st gen and ends with a 3g. Now I guess I could claim this isn’t a continuity error as he works at the Buy More (aka Best Buy in real world) and he could have picked up an iPhone 3g at work when he wasn’t in scene, but that’s a bit of a stretch.

We’ll have to stay tuned to see if he is still packing the 3g in future episodes and then maybe my above theory could start being a bit more believable.

Anyway, here are 2 still shots from the same episode. The first at the very beginning with a first gen on his night table and the second him calling Sarah after he beats the game and gets the code.

NBC’s Chuck takes a jab at microsoft’s zune

by Justin Horn on Oct 28th, 2008 @ 2:07 am

Well anyone that has watched Chuck knows there is a very heavy apple influence in the show. Chuck has been using an iPhone since the beginning. It seems he is still stuck with a 1st gen iPhone, but still better than no iPhone.

Related Post:
* Mythbusters evens the score on the iPod for zune fans

Ok, on to the microsoft jab…

At one point Chuck is trying to beat a video game to get some code to control a satellite that is somehow going to launch missiles (yeah, I know, but still a decent show). So apparently listening to Rush helps you beat this game so he ask his coworker at the buy more if there are any Rush CDs on the shelf…

Chuck “Morgan, hey, uh, buddy do we carry any rush cds in the store?”
Morgan “No need I got’em all on my Zune”
Chuck “You have a Zune?”
Morgan “Are you kidding me, no, no, I’ll grab my iPod”

Makes you wonder if apple has any kind of sponsorship deal or if the writers are just apple fans???

google earth now available on the iPhone

by Justin Horn on Oct 27th, 2008 @ 1:11 am

Well the google connection with the iPhone got another boost today with the release of Google Earth for iPhone. The support site with the user guide is up, but the main google earth mobile site isn’t even up yet. So far it seems pretty cool and functions similar to the regular version.

Some of the cool things with the iPhone version vs the standard one:
- Angle view by position of the iPhone using accelerometer. Put it flat on a desk for a standard view or pick it up to see the more 3d view.
- Tap into the GPS and pinpoint your location
- Multitouch screen… Especially the 2 finger rotate!
