PC gets booed off Late Night

by Justin Horn on Mar 12th, 2009 @ 3:07 pm

Yes, I’m writing another post on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, but I thought it was funny enough. Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht from Diggnation appeared on Wednesday night’s episode. The fun started when they did mock diggnation on Late Night and eveyone, but Alex has a MacBook. When the audience was asked how they like Macs there was a roar, but when asked about the PC it was pretty quiet until the boos started flying. :)

MacBook as a media hub via Mini DisplayPort to HDMI

by Justin Horn on Feb 24th, 2009 @ 3:56 pm

In the last week or so I’ve been reading up on the new Mini DisplayPort included on the new MacBooks. I was thinking how great it would be to use my new MacBook as portable media hub that could easily be hooked up with one cable to any TV in my or a friends house. Even better I could use my iPhone as a remote!

It looks like my dreams have been answered by Monoprice.com!  …well almost. Looks like they will not be availble until March 15, but that isn’t too far away. The adapter come in at only $14.25 which isn’t bad at all. Keep in mind though that this is just an adapter, so if you don’t already have an HDMI cable handy you’ll need to pick one up as well for about $5.

Check back in a few weeks for my review of this setup.

protect your computer and look cool doing it… with gelaskins or infectious

by Chiyin on Feb 3rd, 2009 @ 11:14 pm

Me computer

Update: a better picture in daylight :)

Let me say that I am probably the most anti-protector, anti-case, anti-skin person that exists. I don’t like anything covering my electronic devices, in fact I don’t even like things that resemble a case like the mophie battery pack, but a few weeks ago while reading Wired magazine I came across these laptop skins and I got to admit, they are pretty cool.

Ok, before anyone says anything, Wired actually featured Infectious‘ laptop skins in their monthly Playlist. Not Gelaskins, but I’ll get to that later. Playlist is a section in Wired with very brief descriptions of 10 cool or interesting things they find that month, and these decals really picked my interest. Lately I’ve been noticing more and more scratches on my MacBook, so I’ve been looking for something that could protect my laptop without making it ugly. The decals are made with an adhesive that doesn’t damage or leave residues when you take them off of your equipment and they come with some very funky designs. I decided to check it out.

Gelaskins

Fox’s 24 Day 7: Mac vs Dell

by Justin Horn on Jan 27th, 2009 @ 2:23 am

chloe-macbookCatching up on some DVR’d 24 episodes, I mean “hours”, from the new season I noticed something a bit amusing now that I’ve come to the Mac side of life. During the first couple hours, I noticed that the US government (White House, FBI, etc.) computers were all PCs. It wasn’t until hour 3 when the bigger plot start to unfold (in classic 24 style) that we get to see some Macs. I’m still a few episodes behind so I’m sure there are a lot more surprises in store, but as it stands now the government is running  PCs/Servers from Dell and the uncover/rouge group has several new looking Macbooks and iMacs. I guess 24 is pretty accurate because I just read a report the other day that the White House didn’t even have WiFi :)

To the fun part…

Apple quietly updates the $999 Macbook White

by Justin Horn on Jan 21st, 2009 @ 12:22 pm

Checking the Apple website you can see they have introduced the New Macbook White, which is a hardware bump to the $999 Macbook White 13″. It now includes 2GB DDR2, Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz 1066MHz / 3MB cache, and the new GeForce 9400M bringing it more in line with the base  aluminum model. (via TUAW)

This is an interesting move by Apple that provides a nice entry budget laptop (well budget by Apple’s standards :) ) with a significant savings of $300 over the 13″ aluminum Macbook. At first I had a feeling they would phase the plastic out and go all aluminum, but I guess Apple is really starting to venture into that sub $1000 area full force with this update.

Should be interesting to see how this affects sales in the future as people looking for a good laptop at a fair price (not those looking for $299 laptop) may consider the switch with these latest updates.

I just compared a Dell Inspiron 13 to the new Macbook White and the price was only $225 more for the Macbook. See the comparison details after the break. (continue reading…)
