Updated: at&t denies involvement in the Google Voice app rejection

by Justin Horn on Jul 29th, 2009 @ 12:05 pm

att-or-apple

UPDATE Saga continuing faster than I thought…looks like Sean Kovacs, GV Mobile developer, got an email from Apple blaming AT&T (Thanks for the link Dave).

UPDATE 2 Also, take a look at a post by the developers of VoiceCentral  reviewing the conversation they  had with Apple about their app being removed.

The latest app store rejection of Google Voice is turning out to be a real whodunit! The signs were all pointing to AT&T yesterday, but I wasn’t convinced by John Gruber’s little birdie. It wasn’t until later in the day when Gruber responded to Om Malik’s argument against pointing the finger at AT&T, similar to my own,  that got me rethinking the situation:

Om Malik

Some allege that Apple is doing this at AT&T’s behest. That is just flat-out wrong: If it were true, then Google Voice would be banned on BlackBerry devices that use AT&T as well.

Gruber

But, trust me, it was AT&T’s decision. And this is not the first time AT&T has treated the iPhone differently than other phones they carry. Remember the SlingPlayer app? At AT&T’s behest, the iPhone version was restricted to Wi-Fi, despite the fact that the BlackBerry version works over 3G.

I wanted to see if I could get AT&T to officially chime in, so I left a ‘strongly worded’ comment (they usually respond to the crazy ones :) ) on AT&T’s Facebook page in regards to the Google Voice app rejection and here’s what they had to say:

Justin, We’re really not trying to dodge this, but you will have to talk to Apple regarding its App Store. AT&T is not involved in the approval process, so we cannot speak to this issue.

Not that I was expecting a detailed answer, but AT&T has now gone on record denying they had anything to do with it. So I think after reviewing everything (again) I’m going to stick with my first conclusion from yesterday…I don’t know.  The saga continues…

iPhone 3GS launch: Apple Store Miami Beach

by Justin Horn on Jun 19th, 2009 @ 7:22 pm

The When Will Apple crew headed down to the Miami Beach Apple Store located on world famous Lincoln Road to cover the iPhone 3G S launch (and pick up the new phone for ourselves of course). Even though this launch wasn’t as big as the iPhone 3G (read more about last years launch) due to preorders, best buy, and walmart, it was still an interesting one…as almost anything on South Beach is (especially after 2am). Fun stories, pictures, and videos await your below…so let’s get started!

Review: Monoprice Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter

by Justin Horn on Apr 2nd, 2009 @ 6:07 pm

Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Converter

UPDATE [5.15.09] Still no audio support with latest OSX 10.5.7 update :(

UPDATE [4.13.10] Bad news, no software update to enable audio, but new MacBook Pros released April 2010 support it.

Ever since I purchased my 13″ Unibody Macbook last year I’ve wanted to try out the new Mini DisplayPort. I decided to skip the DVI adapter and wait until I could get my hands on a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter…today Monoprice ended my long wait.

Features listed on the package:

  • Support Mini DisplayPort 1.1a input and HDMI 1.3b output
  • Support HDMI highest video resolution 1080p
  • Support HDMI 225MHz/2.25Gbps per channel (6.75Gbps all channel) bandwidth
  • Support HDMI 12bit per channel (36bit all channel) deep color
  • Support uncompressed audio such as LPCM
  • Support compressed audio such as DTS Digital, Dolby Digital (including DTS-HD and Dolby True HD)
  • Powered from Mini DisplayPort source

The adapter works well and I didn’t notice any artifacts or other video issues while playing HD content to the TV. The adapter fully supported 1080p resolution, as stated in the features, when plugged into to my 46″ Sharp Aquos. I was nervous that using HDMI would cause overscan and not fit correctly in dot by dot mode; however, just as with the direct DVI connection port on the TV, the HDMI worked perfectly.

At first I couldn’t figure out how to get the video to play full screen on the TV. Dragging the window to the TV then going full screen didn’t work, it just slide over to the MacBook before going full. Even setting the TV as the primary monitor didn’t do the trick. Then I started digging around the QuickTime settings and navigated to the full screen options. In here there is a graphical display of the two monitors, similar to the one in display preferences. I just clicked on the TV part of the icon and was all set…easy as pie!

The only let down is the lack of audio support. Even though audio is supported by the adapter and by Mini DisplayPort specifications, it currently does not work. Hopefully in the future Apple will add audio support through a software update, but as of now there no way to know if that’s even an option.

my iPhone as an airline boarding pass

by Justin Horn on Jan 22nd, 2009 @ 11:28 am

My Boarding Pass

The last couple times I’ve traveled there was a third option for online check in on American Airlines that was always grayed out. I could either print my boarding pass or email a link to print later, but the option to get the boarding pass directly on my iPhone was just not available for the airports I was traveling to/from. Well this all changed this week when checking in online for my flight leaving Chicago O’Hare International Airport…to my surprise this option was no longer gray and being the nerd I am I couldn’t resist!

I’m a bit disappointed that google, the company that is always trying new things and so heavily integrated with the iPhone, does not offer a gmail push service.
