Apple post HTML5 demos, blocks non-Safari browsers

Apple has create a new section of their website to highlight all the cools things you can do with HTML5, besides just killing flash.

http://www.apple.com/html5/

One interesting thing is when you try to view the demos in a non-Safari browser, including Chrome which is webkit based, you are given a popup warning “You’ll need to download Safari to view this demo”. This has everyone up in arms talking about how Apple’s open web argument seems silly when they are blocking other browsers from their own HTML5 demos.

Gruber rasies the question:

Is the problem that Apple has written Safari-specific demos, or is that Apple is showing off things only Safari can do? There’s a big difference.

Playing around with this page a bit with this page with Chrome, I was able to bring up the demos by navigating here: http://developer.apple.com/safaridemos/

All the demos seem to work fine in Chrome, so to answer Gruber’s question…Apple has written a Safari-specific demo.

Update Looks like 2 of the demos don’t work properly in Chrome. The video demo loads and you can adjust the size, but the video does not play. The VR demo doesn’t work at all calming ”This demo requires a browser that takes advantage of hardware acceleration”. So it’s possible Apple is blocking the demos since all of them do not work in other bowers, but why not just allow all browsers and say works best in Safari?
