Police getting involved in the iPhone 4 leak

by Justin Horn on Apr 23rd, 2010 @ 4:19 pm

CNet is reporting that a police investigation has begun:

Silicon Valley police are investigating what appears to be a lost Apple iPhone prototype purchased by a gadget blog, a transaction that may have violated criminal laws, a law enforcement official told CNET on Friday.

Apple has spoken to local police about the incident and the investigation is believed to be headed by a computer crime task force led by the Santa Clara County district attorney’s office, the source said. Apple’s Cupertino headquarters is in Santa Clara County, about 40 miles south of San Francisco.

Looks like some of Gizmodo’s staff will be heading to the big house for a little while.

iChatAgent disappears in OS 4 beta 2, Gizmodo phone not final version?

by Justin Horn on Apr 20th, 2010 @ 4:20 pm

First OS 4 beta one has a process running called iChatAgent, then Gizmodo shows what looks to be the 4th gen iPhone with a front facing camera…looked pretty good for video chat. Now the mysterious iChatAgent process is no longer running in beta 2. Does this mean the phone Gizmodo bought is not a final version? Could iChat video be something held until the 5th generation? It’s very possible that this will appear in a future beta, only time will tell…

iPhone 4 leak… the real story… sorta

by Chiyin on Apr 20th, 2010 @ 3:53 pm

Unless you’ve been under a rock, you know all about the iPhone 4 leak that occurred over the weekend… If you don’t, here is a recap…

Here is what happened

Let’s start from the beginning. An Apple engineer working on the new iPhone went to a bar, after a few drinks, this Oompa Loompa of science probably got distracted by the sight of some incredibly hot chicks in the back and forgot the phone when he left. Then some random guy sees the phone and picks it up.

Realizing what this was, the guy gets in touch with some people and Gizmodo ends up paying $10,000 $5,000 for it.  A week passes by, in which time they inspect and dissect the phone in preparation for a detailed preview of what could be the next gen iPhone.

Then suddenly Engadget publishes pictures of the device over the weekend igniting a rumor frenzy.

With speculation going strong, the big guns in the Apple blogsphere (well, mainly Gruber) started poking around and found that this could be the real deal…  Needless to say, the rumor got a lot more buzz, leaving every other tech blog out there playing catch up.

Fortunately for Gizmodo they were ready to counter attack with not just pictures and videos, but by actually saying they had the prototype phone in their possession. Which in turn prompts Apple to take action by sending them a formal request for the return of the device. Basically admitting that this is, if not the final product, at least a prototype of the next iPhone.

But is this what really happened? This is how I think it went down

Engineer goes to bar, some chick distracts the guy and he forgets the phone… Random guy finds the phone and realizes he can make a crapload of money selling it to the highest bidder. He sends out crappy pictures to the biggest douchebags, I mean tech blogs in the industry.  Pictures are blurry and not good for a credible scoop, but enough to encourage a bidding frenzy. Gizmodo wins the bidding and takes the phone home. Once in possession of the device they take it apart and prod around finding that it is really an Apple prototype. Here is where I think things get interesting…

With this in hand they would be the masters of the Apple rumor mill. But that wasn’t enough for Gizmodo. Of course not! Why not take advantage of this opportunity to one up their main competitor Engadget? But how? Well very simple… Take some pictures of the prototype and send them over anonymously to Engadget.  Have them publish these images to create a frenzy over the weekend. Then on Monday swoop in revealing they actually have the 4th coming of the Jebus Phone.

Genius…
