Would the real iPhone killer please stand up?

The biggest hyped “iPhone killers”, BlackBerry Storm and Palm Pre, failed to deliver on that threat. The Pre isn’t an iPhone killer just yet, but at least it’s a decent device. There’s been some recent news about it’s less than superb hardware, but even with that negative press it still seems everyone is really loving the new webOS…so don’t count Palm out just yet. The Storm on the other hand was a complete disaster from just about everyone point of view except the truly dedicated fans and people that wanted an iPhone but hate Apple.

Next up is the number one mobile phone manufacture in the world, Nokia, with the new N97. In a Gizmodo review of the device they seemed to really like the feel of the hardware, but really dumped on the Symbian OS:

I don’t even know where to start the hate parade I want to unleash on S60 5th edition. Nokia’s managed to make RIM’s BlackBerry Storm OS retrofit look like a work of art.

And in summary:

If this really is the best Nokia can do, the giant is doomed to die a slow death, propped up for a while by the cheap handsets that it sells by the tens of millions.

So it seems there really isn’t anyone out there to light a fire under Apple, which is sad becuase it means we will have to wait longer for background apps, better notification system, etc. etc.

I don’t know where you are hearing that the Storm is a complete disaster, I have one and am pretty happy with it! It’s not so much a hatred for Apple, I DO want an iPhone, it’s a hatred of AT&T! The instant the iPhone makes it onto Verizon, it’s mine. In the meantime, the Storm has been great. The one thing that it does better than the iPhone is the touch screen. I love how you can click the screen down. It gives more functionality with there being a screen “touch” & a screen “click”. Of course there are a lot of things that the iPhone does better, I’m just saying. The strongest feature to the iPhone is the apps…which is not part of the device itself. Blackberry launched an App World to try a do a similar thing but developers still think iPhone first. That alone could keep iPhone ahead of other devices.

Everything I read, even from fans of Blackberry, was the Storm was a failure (and to go with the bold). Also, it seems like a failure from a sales standpoint and the amount of returns it had. From what I read the biggest failure was the user interface / OS, although I know they have released some updates since the release to make this better.

I only used the phone for about 10 mins and 10 mins really isn’t a fair test of the user interface, so I can’t comment on the storm personally…just going by the many, many negatives I’ve read.

One thing I was able to determine in that 10 mins is that, unlike yourself, I really hated the click screen. I guess over time I might have adjusted to it, but it just seemed tedious and slowed me down.

As per AT&T I understand this fully. I live in Miami where the AT&T coverage / 3G speed is pretty good. When I travel to NYC it’s awful. It really all depends where you live.
