Updated: When Will Apple turns 1 and we are giving you a gift!

by Justin Horn on Apr 21st, 2009 @ 7:46 pm

UPDATE As expected Apple today announced the name of the next gen iPhone, the iPhone 3G S. Thanks to everyone that entered. Now I would like to congratulate Kevin Alex Baz as the lucky winner of our 1 year anniversary contest!

When Will Apple turned 1 a few days ago. Our official launch date was way back on April 16, 2008 and now that we’ve hit the 1 year mark we wanted to give our readers a chance to win a $50 iTunes card!

To enter the contest all you have to do is leave a comment telling us what you think the 3rd generation iPhone will be called. A lot of people have been referring to it as the iPhone 4G, but 3G goes with the wireless connection and at&t isn’t there yet so that’s probably not it. It doesn’t matter what you guess though,we will pick one guess comment at random after the name is revealed.

The contest is open to anyone in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Republic of Ireland, Italia, Denmark, Deutschland, España, and Nederlands. If you aren’t registered (why aren’t you registered yet?) make sure you enter your email with your comment so we can contact you if you are the winner.

Good Luck!

For the record, my guess is the iPhone 3G Pro.

iPod Touch on the battlefield

by Chiyin on Apr 20th, 2009 @ 10:38 am

We’ve all seen it in futuristic movies, soldiers with cutting edge technology that help them perform on the battlefield. Now, it is a reality. Soldiers on the field are being issued iPod Touches to help them on certain tasks. From translation to identifying a location, the iPod Touch with its flexibility is proving to be a useful tool.

The $230 iPod is much more inexpensive than a device especifically created for the military and with a protective case they are tough enough to endure life on the frontlines. Right out of the box the iPod might not be of much use on the field, but with the right Apps they are helping soldiers with different tasks, from identifying suspects to calculating projectiles trayectories.

For more details here is an article published by Newsweek.

iPhone 3.0 beta 3 released to devs

by Justin Horn on Apr 14th, 2009 @ 6:03 pm

Checking it now, more to come.

What’s New?

  1. Youtube now working again. :)
  2. No more 3G phone calls on Skype.
  3. New mail setting for exchange “Mail Folders to Push” where you can select any of your folders to give you push. alerts instead of just the inbox.

  4. New mail setting for loading of remote images in email.  This is something most email clients do now to prevent spammers from knowing you’ve opened their email, good to see this added to the iPhone.

  5. Using the phone seems more and more normal. It feels more like the speed of 2.2.1 before I moved to 3.0 beta.
  6. Restrictions for apps, I guess to keep the kids from using YouTube for example. Also, not sure if this was in the previous beta or not, but you can now set allowed ratings for songs (Explicit) and movies (PG-13, etc).

What hasn’t changed?

  1. MMS still doesn’t work out of the box even with a family text plan.
  2. A2DP headset still gets choppy when outside the house, but seems slightly better. Hopefully they’ll get it right with the next beta.

iPhone 3.0 beta 3 kills Skype 3G calls

by Justin Horn on Apr 14th, 2009 @ 6:01 pm

Can’t say I’m surprised, but it’s official…Apple has plugged the hole which allowed Skype calls over 3G on beta 2.
