Windows 7 to be on shelves before the end of the year?

by Justin Horn on Apr 30th, 2009 @ 3:50 pm

Microsoft today released Windows 7 Release Candidate 1:

We hope you are as excited as we are about today’s milestone, as we make the Microsoft Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) broadly available for download to managed Beta program participants, including MSDN and TechNet subscribers. If you are not among those who participated in one of the managed Beta programs, you only have to wait until Tuesday, May 5, when the RC will be available through the Customer Preview Program.

And when can we expect the final version of Windows 7 ?

The final engineering milestone is the release to manufacturing (RTM), typically 3-5 months after the RC. We believe the product is high quality and to date have received very positive feedback. This might result in RTM delivery before the 3-5 months timeframe. Ultimately, you’ll decide the quality and assess the delivery once you download and use the RC. Customer and partner feedback will determine how quickly we release.

So it looks like they are on or ahead of schedule. If it goes RTM by July then we should see it on the shelves as early as August. Should be interesting to see if it comes out at the same time as Snow Leopard and Microsoft and Apple can go head to head!

iPhone 3.0 beta 4 A2DP still needs work

by Justin Horn on Apr 30th, 2009 @ 9:51 am

UPDATE A2DP now working great on beta 5!

I first tried the A2DP bluetooth when 3.0b1 first came out and it was definitely beta. Since then it’s slowly improved. The issue of the audio breaking up / freezing when using other apps (vs leaving the phone locked) is gone. The quality is pretty good, but still doens’t seem as good as wired although I guess this is to be expected.

The one issue that’s come up and hasn’t been resovled is while trying to use the headset while jogging. Everytime I go outside with the iPhone in my pocket and my Motorola  S9-HDs on my head it starts to break up. It’s worse when I’m jogging, but still happens even when just walking. With every beta it seems to break up a touch less, but no real improvments. When “kinda” jogging inside the problem doesn’t exist. I have a feeling it has to do with added interference outside the protection of my concert walls. We are still 30-60 days from a final release so I’m hoping they get a few more betas out between now and then with a fix for this issue.

iPhone 3.0 beta 4 released to devs along with iTunes 8.2 Pre-release

by Justin Horn on Apr 28th, 2009 @ 10:34 pm

Following the 2 week schedule iPhone 3.0 beta 4 is now in devs hands, with an added “bonus”. The new beta requies the install through a pre-release version of iTunes 8.2:

iTunes 8.2 Pre-release

This is a pre-release version of iTunes 8.2. You must download and install iTunes 8.2 pre-release in order to activate iPhone OS 3.0 beta 4 on your iPhone or iPod touch.

Pretty neat stuff here, stay tuned for more info…

What’s New?

1. Store placeholder setting now active. After login, it opens a simple non app looking web page which allows you to edit your account and payment info.

2. iTunes sync for notes now requires OSX version 10.5.7 if you’re on a Mac, PC still works fine with Outlook.

Microsoft Surface… “Oh, it’s just so…Microsofty.”

by Justin Horn on Apr 24th, 2009 @ 2:05 pm

Gordon Miller describes his experience using the Microsoft Surface touchscreen computer:

Basking in the glow from our brand-new tabletop touch screen computer, we are greeted with…. not a glossy “welcome” montage, but a standard, legal disclaimer that asks if we accept the terms & conditions. Ugh – like having a lawyer jump in front of you on your way to the presents under the tree, asking for a waiver of rights in case of pine-cone accident, but it’s the times we live in. OK, I eagerly start pushing the check box with my finger, but no response. I try again, still no response.
.
.
.
Approximately 32 impotent touches later, somebody cries out “Hey – what if the ‘free’ keyboard & mouse aren’t just freebies?”. So, ignoring the propaganda in the “Start Here” document (”There’s no keyboard. No mouse, either.”), we open up the wireless keyboard and mouse, insert the external USB Bluetooth adapter,  and voila – our new touch screen computer responds the old-fashioned way.

And possibly one of the best Microsoft related quotes ever:

The whole experience was probably best summed up by Amanda who, when asked why it was taking us so long to get the machine up and running, and why we all looked so unhappy, replied “Oh, it’s just so…Microsofty.”
