rumor of iPhone headed to walmart for $99…I don’t think so

We just got a tip that in addition to the iPhone 3G actually making its way to Walmart, as we exclusively told you, there will be a 4GB model priced at $99 with a 2-year agreement. We’re not putting our stamp of approval behind this one just yet as the tipster isn’t listed in our BGR’s Guide to respected Ninjas handbook, but it does make you think, doesn’t it?

The previous report was that walmart would be selling the iPhone and now this additional information suggest a 4GB model for $99. They do point out that the $99 model rumor isn’t getting their “stamp of approval” just yet though.

I just don’t see either of these rumors coming true…although I’m usually wrong so who knows :)

$99 iPhone
First of all if we do see a $99 iPhone it will most likely come in the form of trickle down effect from a new 32 GB model. I could see a 32GB model being announced at Macworld 2009 and being released in late January at $299. This would then push the 16GB to $199 and 8GB to $99. I give this rumor a less than 10% chance of happening.

Walmart
I think this has a better chance than a $99 4GB iPhone, but I just don’t see walmart as a place apple would hawk it’s high end products. I have to say I haven’t been to a walmart in a while, so I’m not sure what apple products they carry now…so I could be wrong with my assumption. My point is just that discount and apple are like oil and water.

On the other hand Best Buy is a perfect match for apple since they are a very popular electronics retailer. Best Buy sells most of apple products, especially now with a lot stores having the mini apple stores. So Best Buy getting the iPhone was a no brainier. Walmart on the other hand is a ‘mega’ discount department store. I have seen crazier things so I’m going to go 50/50 on chances of this rumor coming true, but leaning towards no.

UPDATE Just checked walmart.com and they do currently carry the iPod line in the stores. So I guess I’ll lean my 50/50 to right down the middle…no leaning :)

UPDATE 2 Seems even more likely now that walmart will be selling the phone, but not an exclusive $99 4GB model
