is your iPhone 3g running slow?

by Justin Horn on Jul 16th, 2008 @ 4:42 pm

A few weird slow downs have occurred with my iPhone 3g.  I’m hoping it’s just some inefficiencies in the new 2.0 firmware that can be fixed with an update from Apple.  Overall I’m very happy with the phone, just hope these little bugs get worked out soon.

UPDATE 2: My iPhone is still slow after 2.0.1 firmware update

UPDATE 1: Firmware 2.0.1 is out!

1) iPhone 3g keyboard on any app or text message or web page runs extremely slow.  You press a letter and then there is a 3 to 5 second delay before it pops up and disappears.  This usually speeds back up after 30 to 60 seconds.

2) Contacts load slow. Every time I open my contacts it takes about 5 seconds before I can start sliding through them. Not sure if this happens because I have about 200 contacts or because I am connected to an exchange server. Another weird thing with the contacts is when I exit out of contacts and go back in it always shows “All Contacts”.  Although it says “All Contacts” it is really on whatever contact folder I was last on (I have 3 different contact folders).

3) iPhone 3g just resets itself to the home screen.  I will be on an app or texting and then it randomly goes back to the home screen.  Sometimes the screen blinks and then goes black.  It stays like this for about 10 seconds before hitting the home button will bring the screen back up.

UPDATE: nerio has brought it to my attention that this is most likely just the iPhone OS shutting down apps that use too much of the limited resources

4) Complete freeze up.  This has only happen one time, but the phone froze up and I had to shut it off and back to get it to fix itself.

UPDATE 8.4.08: This has happen a few more times and also I can’t just shut it off most of the time. I have to hold the lock and home button down for like 10 secs to force a reboot of the phone which takes like 5 mins.

Has anyone else noticed these problems or similar?  I’m hoping there will be a 2.0.1 update shortly that resolves these iPhone 3g issues.

yeah… I’ve experienced all 4 of those problems… I think number 3 has more to do with the apps than with the phone itself… I guess we’ll see what apple and developers will do about this…

RE: #3… thats just what happens when the app crashes, it resets back to the home screen and sometimes the standby screen. happens once in a while, more so lately with 2.0 software on my original iphone.

yes sir i’ve experienced all 3…i’ve called apple tech support to find out more…they reccomend that when you are using 3rd party apps and are finished with them to hold down the home button for 6 seconds to completely close out the app, otherwise it still runs in the background….this does help the problem from occuring as much however it does not stop it all together the lag eventually comes back to the keyboard after a few days

Same here. It’s very annoying. Especially when I try to show off my iPhone 3G to the envying crowd. I can’t wait for that 2.1 software.

2.1 is supposed to be out sometime in September with new feature and goodies, but hopefully 2.0.1 bug fix will be out in the next few weeks

It’s driving me crazy–especially the slow-loading contacts! The keyboard delay doesn’t bother me much because I don’t wait for it and it catches up in a rush 30 seconds later.

But I have also noticed a significant lag when I go to text conversations. It sits there with a white screen for a while before it gets there.

I have also encounter these problems. One thing that I have found works to avoid the slow loading contacts list is to press phone then contacts instead of selecting contacts from the home screen. For some reason this seems to allow you to scroll through your contacts with out having to wait 3-5 seconds. Hope that helps…

The lag is annoying but at least you can keep typing and it will catch up. My 3G has all the same problems covered here.

I got my 3G last week, ran the iTunes update (before using it for the first time) and I am so far on 3/4 for the problems listed. I hardly use any 3rd party apps at all yet. Apple are supposed to vet them before publishing through the app store anyway so thats a rubbish excuse (surely performance is one of the considerations…..)

I find that when the txt keyboard is slow, if i come out to the home page, lock the phone then unlock it again it appears to perform OK. I havent tried holding the home button for 6 seconds though, probably has the same effect…

One mate has just got into the habbit of re-booting daily…. Come on Apple, this really isnt good enough is it??

A quick tip, other than restarting by holding your home and reset buttons down beyond the switch off slide button. Is to type a single letter move the cursor in front of it and type, you lose predictive spelling but it types as fast as normal. An odd semi fix, but is better than a restart in certain situations.

I just think that it’s ironic that for six months my 3G iphone worked without a hitch. Three weeks ago my phone starts running all slow, freezing and locking up and then TTTAAAA DDAAAHHHH, a new 3G “S” a faster iphone comes out. Call me a conspiracy theorist but come on!

Agreed Eli, I have a 16GB iPhone 3G and it has been running fine, and then recently it locks up, quits responding, and is running a lot slower. I was starting to get fed up with my phone when I heard that the 3G “S” was coming out…

My iphone 3g didn’t start the lag until the 3GS was released. The problem is obviously Apple programming the 3G to be slower now that the “faster” 3GS is out. It’s no coincidence that I had no lag for 6 months until the 3GS was released. And if anyone doubts that Apple would do something like this, you are naive.

Yea all of those problems have been happening to me too! I reboot my phone like twice a week in an attempt to keep it running fresh but problems like slow txting still occasionally occur. My iPhone 3g froze so bad that I had to wait until
the battery went flat before i could reboot itwhich was a bit concerning! I have the latest software installed an have reduxedthe number of apps down to like 20. Anyway I hope Apple fix it and it isn’t some ploy to get existing users to buy the new model cos that would really suck!

I have the 32GB 3GS and I’ve been having very similar problems creep in over the last week or so. I’ve noticed it while texting or typing in facebook…that may be just because that it what I do the most. It’s really starting to annoy me.

I think apple is making the iPhone 3G look slower with the new update that way customers would buy the new iPhone 3Gs wich is supposlly faster than it’s predessesor, what a great idea huh? Doing this apple will sell more iPhones 3Gs!! Wich it means more money for them, they sure know how to do bussines

i really didnt notice the fact that after reading all the comments from everyone else that my son mentioned how his iphone all of a sudden got real real slow to the point of not wanting to use it.

what i do remember is that when i was reading about jailbreaking an iphone a customer asked if you dont like the result of the jailbreak you can reset your phone to factory default. so i started doing that before my sons phone started to go bad. I have since then been reading about this epidemic with many iphones and really feel that they are right in that all of a sudden many 3g iphones are slow. you may have to reset it, it might not get a lot better but a little is better than nothing
