[review] mophie juice pack 3g for iPhone 3g

by Justin Horn on Nov 30th, 2008 @ 10:59 pm

After a few delays I finally got my hands on the new Mophie Juice Pack 3g. The juice pack is an external battery pack for the iPhone 3g. Mophie states the juice pack should about double your battery life giving you additional standby time up to 350 hours, talk time up to 6 hours on 3G (12 hours on 2G), Internet use up to 6 hours on 3G (7 hours on Wi-Fi), audio playback up to 28 hours, and video playback up to 8 hours. As with the original juice pack, which was the first battery extender to receive the “Works with iPhone 3G” blessing, the new juice pack has also received the certification.

The first gen juice pack works exclusively with the first gen iPhone and this second gen juice pack with the iPhone 3g due to the design that fits like a glove. If you are still rock’n a first gen iPhone, check out our friend Dr. Macenstein’s review of the first gen mophie juice pack. The new Mophie Juice Pack 3g shares the same basic look as the first gen, but seems to fit a bit more snug saving some space at the bottom.

Ok, enough about the past, how does this new one hold up with the 3g iPhone?

On his website Daring Fireball, John Gruber recently responded to an article by Macworld about the Storm’s copy & paste feature. Hopefully those of you that read this will give apple a bit more credit for waiting to deliver it’s copy & paste solution.

iPhone 2.2 firmware coming in next 24 hours?

by Justin Horn on Nov 20th, 2008 @ 8:31 pm

We shall see, but as Friday approaches I’m feeling more and more confident about this rumor. My friend at a local apple store mentioned that 2.2 was floating around with the higher ups at the genius bar. So normally something like this wouldn’t be in the hands of even apple store employees unless a release was eminent…say tomorrow :)

Sorry to say I don’t have any other cool info for you guys like if apple secretly added push notification or copy / paste, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough!

UPDATE
iTunes 8.0.2 is out! Maybe another precursor to iPhone 2.2???

record labels are still afraid to let go… of the physical media

by Chiyin on Nov 20th, 2008 @ 12:03 pm

It’s been 5 years since Apple introduced the iTunes Music Store and since then more than 5 billion tracks have been sold. Proof that digital distribution is a viable way to sell music. Yet record labels are still refusing to fully adopt the model and keep insisting on selling music the old fashion way. Their latest attempt to keep the physical format comes in the form of slotMusic, a concept developed by SanDisk.  It’s basically a micro SD memory card preloaded with music and additional content such as photos and videos.

The concept is certainly interesting, directly tapping into people’s need to physically hold what they are paying for, but how long will this need persist? Today’s kids are immersed in a digital culture and surely will not care in what form their music comes. So clearly this concept is targeted to those who grew up with records, cassette or CDs. And once the nostalgia wears off, so will the physical format.

Another factor that will greatly hinder the format is the lack of support for the iPod. Not supporting the music player with over 70% of the market share is not what could be considered a smart move. And with the iTunes Store being the number 1 music vendor in the US, Apple won’t be in a hurry to adopt the slotMusic for the iPod.

It’s just interesting to see the labels in a desperate attempt to hold on. Let’s see how long this will last, maybe it will stay longer than the MiniDisc.
