apple putting some heat on microsoft

as more information about snow leopard becomes available it seems like apple is adding some nifty features into the os that will leave microsoft playing catch up… first they announced Grand Central and now they are adding ZFS to the server version of snow leopard… the heat is definitely on for billy and his gang…

So what’s Grand Central? and ZFS?

Grand Central is a “new set of technology” that promises better performance for multi-core processors… apple has been in the forefront of the multi-core movement for quite some time… they started in the mid 90’s with the DayStar multi-processor Macs followed by the dual processors Power Macs… now that single-core processors are no longer the norm, this “new technology” might put them further ahead, leaving microsoft in a bad position…

the other announcement is for ZFS on the server version of the os… this new file system was designed from the ground up to take advantage of current hardware and to better safeguard data integrity…  I won’t go into the details of the system but it’s safe to say that it is better than the current HFS+ used in mac and much better than NTFS on windows, which incidently is a 20 years old technology…  let’s hope to see this on the regular version of the os sooner rather than later…

so will windows 7 have the same improvements? I guess we just have to wait and see what comes out of redmond…
