Why is Apple blocking Google Voice apps?

by Justin Horn on Jul 28th, 2009 @ 4:08 pm

The hot news today is a high profile app store rejection…this time for the official Google Voice app. In addition to rejecting Google they have now removed the third party apps GV Mobile (now available for jailbreakers through Cydia) and VoiceCentral that have been listed in the app store for months. It was just about two weeks ago when I wrote about the release of official Google Voice apps for Android and Blackberry.  I wondered why they would release one for Blackberry before the iPhone, but turns out the app was done and submitted about 6 weeks ago!

TechCrunch spoke with a Google representative that said:

We work hard to bring Google applications to a number of mobile platforms, including the iPhone. Apple did not approve the Google Voice application we submitted six weeks ago to the Apple App Store. We will continue to work to bring our services to iPhone users — for example, by taking advantage of advances in mobile browsers.

So now the question on everyone’s mind is why?

Official Google Voice apps coming to Blackberry and Android today, but no iPhone yet

UPDATE You can visit m.google.com/voice to download the app to your Blackberry, unfortunately visiting this page from the iPhone gives you the following.

no-gvoice-app-for-iphone

I was just searching the app store Monday looking for an official Google Voice iPhone app, but to my dismay there wasn’t one. I double checked the Google Mobile app to see if they snuck it in there, but no luck. There is some good news though…TechCrunch is reporting that there are official apps coming to Blackberry and Android:

Two apps are being released tomorrow morning, for Blackberry and Android phones. The Android app is the most complete and takes over the native dialer, address book and call log. Users won’t be bothered with accidentally dialing numbers through the device phone number. The Blackberry app is less integrated, accessing only the native address book, and uses its own dialer. Users can’t simply go into the call log and return missed calls. They need to go back to the address book and select Google Voice to make the call. Still, it solves a big problem.

So hopefully it’s only a matter of time before we get a official iPhone app!

If you can’t wait for an official app you do have 2 choices via third party developers, both for $2.99.

Google Voice invites catching up to demand

by Justin Horn on Jul 9th, 2009 @ 9:12 pm

google-voice-invite

I first sent in my request for an invite a few months ago and was starting to think I wouldn’t get my invite till the end of the year, but I just got it today! Haven’t played with it that much, but got my new number, voicemail, and phones setup which took all of 10 mins to do. It even lets you call into your Google Voice number to initiate an outbound call and shows your GV number on the caller ID of the person you are calling. So if you are waiting for your invite, it looks like you wait might soon be over.

For those of you leaving under a rock, here is more info on Google Voice.

Apple vs Google: The Voice Assistant

by Justin Horn on Jun 29th, 2012 @ 12:36 pm

Have to agree with TechnoBuffalo here, Google has really taken their voice assistant to the next level. Although, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple has something up it’s sleeve with Siri and the latest 2012 iPhone due out this Fall.

iPhone 4S reviews, click here if your Google is broken

by Justin Horn on Oct 12th, 2011 @ 2:55 am

John Gruber…Daring Fireball: The iPhone 4S

This is the easiest product review I’ve ever written. The iPhone 4S is exactly what Apple says it is: just like the iPhone 4, but noticeably faster, with a significantly improved camera, and an impressive new voice-driven feature called Siri.

Jim Dalrymple…The Loop: Review: iPhone 4S

Much of the talk surrounding the introduction of the iPhone 4S is about Siri, Apple’s voice assistant technology.

After using Siri for a week, I can tell you it works just as good in real life situations as it did in Scott Forstall’s demo at the launch event.

Jason Snell…MacWorld: iPhone 4S review: It’s a sure thing

It’s a classic look, easily my favorite of all the iPhone designs to date. The fit and finish are immaculate; not a single thing about the iPhone 4S feels cheap. In terms of styling, the iPhone 4 feels like the most expensive electric razor ever made, or maybe like a finely-tuned luxury watch.

Updated: You can’t handle the truth

by Justin Horn on Aug 21st, 2009 @ 9:44 am

AT&T, Apple, and Google are supposed to be submitting their official response to the FCC today about the whole Google Voice rejection fiasco. My guess is by end of day today we still won’t have a good (or any) reason for the rejection, just some “lawyerspeak” saying (or trying to say) just enough to please the FCC without actually answering the question. Call me a pessimist, but these 3 companies are so big I don’t expect answer to come out of them so easily.

Update Told you so…at least I think it’s a bullshit response.

Read the responses on Engadget.
Read Daring Fireball’s take.
