Apple sells 5.2 million iPhones last quarter…a 626 percent over a year-ago!

by Justin Horn on Jul 21st, 2009 @ 5:00 pm

Wow, 5.2 million in just one quarter…pardon my french, but that is a shit load! Mac sales were also up 4% over a year ago.  iPods were down 7%, but I have to imagine that a lot of possible iPod touch buyers decided to just go with the iPhone.

App Review: iMetal, only for iPhone 3GS

by Justin Horn on Jul 17th, 2009 @ 5:29 pm

Earlier today I brought up the fact that iMetal (iTunes Link), one of the first (if not the first) iPhone 3GS only app has been released. I honestly was expecting the first 3GS only app to be something taking advantage of the faster CPU and extra RAM, but turns out it was the compass.

iMetal uses the magnetic dector/compass in the iPhone 3GS to measure the surrounding magnetic field. When a metal object is near, this magnetic field changes and iMetal will alert. Impress your friends with your iPhone’s incredible hardware capability.

Only works with iPhone 3GS.

It is an entertainment app so I didn’t really have my exceptions set that high, but it actually kind of works. The biggest downside is that you practically have to be touching the metal object for it to work. It did not work on keys or other small objects. It did work on a pair of nail clippers…most of the time, but it never failed when hovering over my unibody MacBook.

So if you are into gimmicky entertainment apps, this is for you! A lot of other apps in this category are 100% entertainment with no link to reality, but this one is different in that it actually does detect magnetic fields…as long as the phone is within an inch of the metal that is. :)

iMetal, the first 3GS only app?

by Justin Horn on Jul 17th, 2009 @ 1:17 pm

imetal-icon

I haven’t read or seen any 3GS only apps yet, so this might be the first…

iMetal (iTunes Link) just hit the iTunes shelves and claims to use the compass to detect metal:

iMetal usess the magnetic dector/compass in the iPhone 3GS to measure the surrounding magnetic field.

Only works with iPhone 3GS.

Since it’s only 99 cents I will give it a try and write a quick review of shortly. Check back later today.

iPhone video from the bottom of an RC plane

by Justin Horn on Jul 16th, 2009 @ 9:26 am

So this guy tapes his iPhone 3GS to the bottom of an RC plane for a pretty cool birds eye view.

Steps:

  1. Start video recording on your 3GS
  2. Tape 3GS to bottom of RC plane
  3. Fly RC plane hoping you don’t crash or the tape doesn’t break

at&t enables my MMS? …and then turns it off

by Justin Horn on Jul 15th, 2009 @ 7:48 pm

UPDATE It has now stopped functioning after a few MMS, trying a reboot now to see if I can get it to work again

UPDATE 2 Tried to get some info out of at&t support, but all they said is what I already assumed:

Robin: You are correct that MMS is not available for the iPhone yet.
Robin: However, we are in the testing phase of MMS. I can not say for a fact that this is why you had access to MMS for a short time but it could explain it.

NOTE: This is standard 3.1 beta 2 install on an iPhone 3GS, no hacks

My SMS stopped working, so I decided to reboot my phone. After rebooting SMS were working as normal, but decided to give MMS at try and it worked!

  • I got a confirmation from one person with an iPhone 3GS on 3.0 that they received the MMS from a weird 850 area code number
  • I was able to send to my email address via MMS
  • I was not able to receive a forward back from the iPhone 3GS 3.0 iPhone that received my MMS
  • I did not test getting an incoming MMS as my girlfriend’s iPhone on the other end that received the MMS got it the old fashion iPhone way via view my messages. This is why I got the view my messages on the reply / forward back
  • The other iPhone 3GS on my plan still can not send MMS after a reboot. Maybe they are doing it by number and not account?
  • Trying to go to the viewmymessage.com link pictured below gives me the following error: “Failure encountered during view message.”

Apple Store’s new neighbor… the Zune of retail?

by Chiyin on Jul 15th, 2009 @ 3:55 pm

Zune Store

First they gave us the Zune after the success of the iPod and now, in a similar move, Microsoft is opening retail stores following in the foot steps of Apple Stores. Not only that, their plan is to open the stores in close proximity to Apple’s retail chain… Maybe hoping to maybe grab some of their customers away?

Here is a statement from a Microsoft rep given to CNET

As we progress on our retail strategy there willbe scenarios where we have stores in proximity to Apple. We are on track to open stores in the Fall time frame.

Is this going to be like the Zune of retail? I guess we will see when Fall comes.
