by Justin Horn on May 29th, 2009 @ 10:18 pm

While interviewing Sam Diaz, Sumi Das says:

It has been confirmed that Steve Jobs will not put in an appearance at the World Wide Developers Conference.

Sam Diaz responds with:

Now there was some hope and some anticipation that he might make a cameo appearance at the developer conference this year, but the company has that’s not going to happen.

at&t’s network upgrade news backs up rumors of 3.5G 3rd gen iPhone

by Justin Horn on May 27th, 2009 @ 12:18 pm

The rumors of the the at&t network upgrade have been confirmed by an at&t press release (via @BadAsh77) today:

AT&T today announced plans to upgrade the nation’s fastest 3G network to deliver considerably faster mobile broadband speeds. The network upgrades are slated to begin later this year, with completion expected in 2011.

The upgrade to High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is part of AT&T’s plan for continued investments to deliver the nation’s best mobile broadband experience – the ideal combination of speed, coverage and best device line-up. AT&T today has the nation’s fastest 3G network and has attracted more than twice the number of smartphone users than any other competitor.

The rumors of an upgraded iPhone being able to handle the 3G+ (or 3.5G) have been around for a while.

Most recently iLounge added to the rumor with:

Also of interest: we’ve been told that the next-generation iPhone will come in six versions: two storage capacities each for 3G, enhanced 3G (“3.5G/3.75G”), and mainland China versions of the phone, which will have the same size and general design of the current model, but with a less scratchable matte plastic body. Each of the three versions has been made to match the telecom systems of specific countries, so users in one country shouldn’t expect to have the option between a “slow iPhone” and “fast iPhone.” As before, you’ll get capacity options and different colors.

iLounge is a well respected blog site with a good track record so along with this and the latest at&t press release I feel pretty confident that the 3rd gen iPhone will get a speed boost.

Gruber post his official Next iPhone predictions

by Justin Horn on May 21st, 2009 @ 7:56 pm

John Gruber of Daring Fireball has posted his guesses on what the next iPhone will bring. I say guesses, but it’s widely known that Gruber has been around the Apple world for a while and “knows people that know people”  so I usually take what he has to say a bit more seriously. The entire article is worth a read so check it out, but here is his summary:

So if I were a betting man, here’s how I’d handicap expectations for the WWDC keynote:

Would Wager Heavily Upon: A next-generation iPhone to be released in July, with roughly double the CPU horsepower and an improved video-capable camera, with 16 and 32 GB storage capacities.

Would Wager a Small Amount Upon: New iPhone prices at $199/299 for 16/32 GB; 256 MB RAM on new iPhones; existing stock of current iPhone 3Gs sold at a discount through Apple’s web site. (Also, in Mac news, I’d bet a small amount on a refresh to Apple’s notebook lineup, with a branding change where the “MacBook Pro” designation is used for all aluminum models,1 and just plain non-Pro “MacBook” is used for plastic models.)

Would Wager a Sandwich Upon: Improved battery life for the new iPhone, despite the beefier CPU.

Would Wager Heavily Against: Anything at all related to the in-the-works tablet thingmajig. Not going to happen at WWDC.

Would Not Wager Upon, But, Well, I’ve Heard Things: An “iPhone Mini”, with hardware roughly three-fourths the height and width of existing iPhones. I expect to see something along these lines sooner than later, but I do not believe it’s going to debut this July alongside the new flagship iPhones.

This is pretty much in line with the general exceptions and rumors. I would personally bet more than a sandwich upon improved battery life as Apple is very concerned with battery life on the iPhone and MacBooks. Even some of the latest MacBooks are sporting a non-removable battery that gives the user up to 8 hours of use! Besides an improved battery the CPU and RAM, although faster, could actually use less power.

Palm’s Pre to finally make it’s public debut on June 6th

by Justin Horn on May 19th, 2009 @ 9:27 am

We’ve heard the talk for months and now the Pre will finally be put to the test when it’s released on June 6th according to pre|centeral.net:

The news just came across the wires, folks.  June 6th. $199 after $100 mail in rebate and a 2 year contract.  Believe it.

It will be at Sprint Stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Wal-Mart.  The Touchstone dock will be available on the same day, $69.99 for the dock and battery door, or $49.99 for the dock alone and $19.99 for the battery door.

We’ve had a few rumors that stock will be pretty thin across the country, so we’re going to go ahead and recommend you start lining up now.

Review: Email n’ Walk iPhone App

by Chiyin on May 18th, 2009 @ 4:31 pm

Email n' Walk

As the name of the app suggests, this application lets you type an email while walking… the application overlays the text input boxes and keyboard over a live feed from the camera… it doesn’t actually send out the message but opens the mail app and paste the subject and text in a message to be sent out… it’s pretty cool… one of the best uses of the camera so far… my only wish? to be able to use it to compose text messages instead of emails.

iPhone App Devs to help test push servers

by Chiyin on May 18th, 2009 @ 3:53 pm

ap-push-1 ap-push-2 ap-push-3 ap-push-4

The development program just sent out an email asking developers actively testing iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 to help test the push notification service. For this purpose they have selected a pre-release app that uses the push notification for developers to install and help test the service…

From the email:

As a developer actively working with iPhone OS 3.0 beta, we would like your help in testing the Apple Push Notification service. We have selected a pre-release version of the Associated Press app for iPhone OS 3.0 to create a high-volume test environment for our servers.

Looks like the update is just around the corner… with this dressed rehearsal and whatnot…
