First winner for our annual iPhone release poll

The last couple years no one was able to guess the iPhone release, but that has all changed now. When Will Apple member Baz has taken the gold this time, with his guess of October 14th, winning $200 in Apple cash!

No one correctly guessed the name, so there is not bonus prize being awarded, but Baz…you were very close.

When is the iPhone 5 / iPhone 4s coming out?

It’s that magical time of year when our “biggest and prizeiest” release poll, for the next generation iPhone, is ending (with no winners, sorry guys, but I’m happy I haven’t had to pick up a second job to support this website just yet) and the latest iPhone is hitting store shelves…[record scratching noise]…but not this year! Unfortunately, for all of us, it’s late June and we are just starting our release poll for the iPhone 5 / iPhone 4s (or whatever the next generation 2011 iPhone will be called), “scheduled” for release sometime in the next several months. So even though we aren’t playing with our new iPhones right now, this is our favorite time of year here, as the second generation iPhone release was the reason for creating When Will Apple in the first place.

The winner of this poll will get their hands on a brand new iPhone 5 / iPhone 4s¹…and don’t forget that bonus prize², just like last year.

The rumors have been flowing in 2011, unlike last year where the iPhone 4 rumor faucet was brought to a drip, overshadowed by the imminent release of the first iPad. The rumors seemed crazy (or maybe I just didn’t want to believe), as most pointed to no iPhone in June, thanks to WWDC 2011 being “all about the software”.

Along with the release of the next iPhone, there is an impressive update coming to iOS. The next version, iOS 5, finally brings in the so desperately need notification center. No longer can the hordes of Andriod users make fun of us for [Do-do-do...close], make fun of us for always getting [Do-do-do...close], for always being interrupted! There are lots of other goodies, but notifications was my last big, glaring, missing piece of iOS that’s bugged me ever since I got the iPhone…so now I’m free to look for new things to hate.

When is iOS 4.2 coming out?

UPDATE Because of the unexpected nature of a last minute bug fix to the iOS 4.2 GM release, which has now changed the release to 4.2.1, we are not going to make a new poll. All current votes will be placed toward the when any version of iOS 4.2.x comes out.

iOS 4.2 is planned for release in November bringing a unified iOS to the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. This is a nice upgrade to the iPhone and iPod, but a much bigger upgrade for the iPad which is still curently stuck on iOS 3.x series of releases. Even though it’s scheduled for November, keep in mind the white iPhone was supposed to come with the black, but was delayed to late July. Then later Apple released a PR note stating that it wouldn’t be available until later this year [Related Poll: when will white iPhone 4 be released?].

White iPhone 4 delayed, new poll created

UPDATE The white iPhone has been dealyed, yet again. The latest is that it will be out next year, but at this point it looks like it probably won’t appear until iPhone 5. So unfortunately this poll has come to a close.

Yup, Apple delayed the white iPhone 4…again.

White models of Apple’s new iPhone® 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.

When is iOS 4.1 coming out?

There will most likely still be an iOS 4.0.1 bugfix update for “the bars”, so check out that poll as well! iOS 4.1 will probably bring new features like game center and other performance tweaks. Only time will tell, in the meantime place your vote!

Will the white iPhone 4 ever come out?

UPDATE Poll canceled and replaced with new White iPhone 4 poll.

Yes, it will. Apple announced that it would be coming in the second half of July. Apple’s missed the iPad deadlines this year, so we’ve pushed the poll to cover July and August just in case! I’m wondering if the pain on the white iPhone may improve the antenna issue, if so I may have to exchange my black one for a white one.

So if you’re still waiting to get an iPhone 4, why not pass the time by watching and voting on this poll!

When will iOS 4.0.1 bars fix update come out?

By now you’ve heard all about the iPhone 4 antenna issue. Apple finally responded, saying it was the display of bars and there was no antenna issue. This is an outright lie! The iPhone signal drop in hand is about 10x worse than it was with the 3GS. So while all phones may suffer from signal attenuation, the iPhone 4 suffers far more than others.

There are a lot of people that say they don’t have the issue. They are making this determination by looking at the bars. What they don’t realize is they are still losing signal, but going from a great signal to a good signal. This goes unnoticed as the phone still shows 5 bars and although diminished, it still has decent data and phone reception.

My prediction is once iOS 4.0.1 bug “bars” fix update is released, there are going to be a lot more people seeing the problem. Instead of from “dropping” from 5 bars to 5 bars, the “I don’t have an issue” crowd will see their 5 bars drop to 3 or 5. While less dramatic than the 5 to 1 drop, going from what they believed was a perfect signal with no effect in hand, to small drop is going to piss them off. They will assume Apple’s “fix” broke their perfectly working phone and the whole antenna issue will be on the front page again.

Here we go again…Skype iOS 4 app is coming soon

After waiting 115 days for “coming soon”, we finally got Skype calling over 3G at the end of May. Now Skype is back for act two, with the iOS 4 multitasking app demoed (see YouTube video below) at the iOS 4 announcement back in March.

When will iPhone OS 4.0 come out?

By this time last year there was already an official announcement of OS 3.0 and betas in developers hands…this year it’s all iPad iPad iPad. Even though most of the rumors this spring season have focused on the iPad, we haven’t forgetting about the OS behind it. The biggest rumors swirling around with 4.0 is third party multitasking. After we got copy paste, this is probably the most demanded feature for the iPhone. To me it seemed they could have done background apps with iPhone OS 3.0, so I really believe that we will see it in 4.0.

So with the only betas around being 3.2, which I believe is just a stop gap measure to get the iPad out the door, it seems we are already a couple weeks behind last year. Does this mean the release date of 4.0 will have to be pushed back to July or even August? Or has Apple been working on it more internally and will only have a few betas before going golden master in time for a June release?

I’d also like to remind everyone to not be shy…yes, take your guess in the official poll for a chance to the win the prize, but after don’t forget to post your thoughts on what features 4.0 will have and why you think it will be released on the day you picked.

When is the 4th generation iPhone coming out?

It’s that time of year again when we all start wondering when and what the next iPhone will be. This is our favorite time of year here as the iPhone was the reason for creating When Will Apple. So yet again we are kicking up our prize for the 2010 version of OMG a new iPhone is coming!!! The winner of this poll will get their hands on a brand new fourth generation iPhone¹. Oh yeah, we also have a bonus prize² this year…more on this later.

The rumor mill seems to be pretty quiet this year on the 4th gen iPhone, most likely being overshadowed by the imminent release of the first gen iPad. Along with the iPad there seems to be more buzz around the 4.0 iPhone OS, but it will only be a matter of time before the 4th gen hardware rumors heat up. So will Apple try to push out the new iPhone early this year to head off the competition for Google’s N1? Will they push it back a little to keep the focus on iPad and 4.0 OS? No one knows, probably not even Apple, but that won’t stop you from speculation and trying to win prizes on When Will Apple will it?
