Woah, Apple is really off it’s game this year.

Apple PR:

White models of Apple’s new iPhone® 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.

First, the white iPhone 4 not being available on launch day, delayed until late July. Then the antenna issue being mocked in the mainstream press. Next having to do an out of the ordinary press conference that cut Jobs’ Hawaiian vacation short. And now, today, they have delayed the White iPhone until “later this year”. Apparently Apple is an unstoppable machine though. Even when they aren’t running smoothly, it doesn’t seem to slow down sales at all. Actually it just helps them set new records!

How many of you are going to keep waiting?

Gawker keeps releasing negative Apple stories just because their feelings are hurt after the bought stolen property that belonged to Apple. The latest headline “Apple’s Worst Security Breach: 114,000 iPad Owners Exposed” seems to blame Apple for an AT&T screwup.

FastCompany reporting on it with a bit more truth than Gawker:

Goatse figured out a way to have AT&T provide email addresses for subscribers, using what’s called an ICC-ID. The ICC-ID identifies a SIM card, thus linking a customer with a device. Each AT&T customer has an individual ICC-ID. Without going into too much hackery language, AT&T has a script on its website that will return an email address if the ICC-ID is provided. Goatse managed to use it by guessing a huge swath of ICC-IDs based on a few real ones–they all have similar patterns–and feeding them into the script.

The funny thing is it’s not even potential security threat either, except maybe a bit of additional spam as FastCompany points out:

At the very worst, it briefly put iPad 3G subscribers at risk of spamming. It’s a sexy story, since it involves celebrities, the iPad, and security leaks, but it’s really a very minor one as far as those go.

So yes, AT&T did screw up and this isn’t good and lucky it wasn’t that big of a deal, but the main point here is this had nothing to do with Apple.

UPDATE Looks like even Gizmodo get’s it better than their parent Gawker

Apple has create a new section of their website to highlight all the cools things you can do with HTML5, besides just killing flash.

http://www.apple.com/html5/

One interesting thing is when you try to view the demos in a non-Safari browser, including Chrome which is webkit based, you are given a popup warning “You’ll need to download Safari to view this demo”. This has everyone up in arms talking about how Apple’s open web argument seems silly when they are blocking other browsers from their own HTML5 demos.

Gruber rasies the question:

Is the problem that Apple has written Safari-specific demos, or is that Apple is showing off things only Safari can do? There’s a big difference.

Playing around with this page a bit with this page with Chrome, I was able to bring up the demos by navigating here: http://developer.apple.com/safaridemos/

All the demos seem to work fine in Chrome, so to answer Gruber’s question…Apple has written a Safari-specific demo.

Update Looks like 2 of the demos don’t work properly in Chrome. The video demo loads and you can adjust the size, but the video does not play. The VR demo doesn’t work at all calming ”This demo requires a browser that takes advantage of hardware acceleration”. So it’s possible Apple is blocking the demos since all of them do not work in other bowers, but why not just allow all browsers and say works best in Safari?

The boring stuff you already read on 800 other blogs…

Wired published an article today about how the iPhone 4th Gen finder:

Police closed in on the man who found and sold a prototype 4G iPhone after his roommate called an Apple security official and turned him in, according to a newly unsealed document in the ongoing police investigation.

Then CNBC reports (via @9to5Mac) that the police unsealed the wrong document:

In a stunning twist to the ongoing drama surrounding the Apple iPhone prototype, the San Mateo County Court unsealed the wrong documents earlier today connected to this case.

Ok, now the funny stuff…thanks to John Gruber. He posted an article on Daring Fireball about an hour ago entitled, “Where in the World Is Jesus Diaz?”:

I’ve emailed Diaz, along with Gizmodo editorial director Brian Lam, but haven’t gotten a response. My simple questions:

Is Jesus Diaz currently in the United States? If not, where is he, when did he leave the U.S., and when is he planning to return? Lastly, what role, if any, did Diaz have in the purchase of the iPhone unit from Brian Hogan?

Here are some tweets in response to this article from both Jesus Diaz and Brian Lam:

Jesus posted a tweet with a photo of him apparently at the office in the US:

@jesusdiaz: I wish I was in Spain now. Sadly: http://yfrog.com/6bxg3wj hey, @gruber you are a liar #losers #fail #assclowns

@jesusdiaz: That last tweet was about this, btw: http://bit.ly/coSTVS @gruber, why do you insist in publishing slander and lies?

[view tweets]

Brian Lam also got in on the fun:

@blam: Hey @Gruber, I was in mexico, too. Just a tip for your investimaginations. PS, you got my title wrong. [view tweet]

For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot. Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover. Most Flash websites will need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices. If developers need to rewrite their Flash websites, why not use modern technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript?

Lee created a video (below) to demonstrate that flash sites don’t need to be rewritten to support touch devices. The problem with the video is the touch device is an old school, mouse cursor where you put your finger device…not the modern multitouch devices like the iPhone.

Even though I disagree with Lee that most flash sites work perfectly on a touch device, neither do a lot of non flash sites. Rollovers are not a flash issue, but a user interface issue facing any website, program, etc. written for a mouse and and keyboard. New websites will have to created to work well on both a traditional mouse based computer and a touch based device. Depending on the website, it might even be necessary to make a sister site geared only for touch based device.

Here at When Will Apple our new javascript based charts make use of the hover effect. You hover over the chart to see the number of votes for a particular month. On iPhone OS devices you tap on the bar to see the “number of votes popup”. Yes, we could create a touch based version of the site that would work a bit better, but this is a good compromise and falls into the category of sites working well for both interfaces.

Even though I disagree on this being a flash problem, I do agree with Steve on his other point…If you need to redesign, why not use the latest and greatest?

In 1908 Henry Ford believed horses and steam engines were the past and wanted to create a new type of light engine (internal combustion). In 2010 Steve Jobs drops Flash to support HTML5, which he believes is the future of the web.

Love this section from Henry Ford’s press release:

All the wise people demonstrated conclusively that the engine could not compete with steam. They never thought that it might carve out a career for itself. That is the way with wise people – they are so wise and practical that they always know to a dot just why something cannot be done; they always know the limitations.

Wonder how many people though Ford was crazy at the time?

Wired is reporting:

As it turns out, the person who sold the iPhone 4G to Giz for $5 grand is just a regular 21 year old dude from Redwood City, California. And his name is Brian Hogan. Though Apple was aware of the perp’s identity even before the Police went a knockin’ on his door, his name remained a mystery until Wired was able to deduce that Hogan, pictured above, was indeed the the catalyst behind what was arguably the biggest gadget scoop in history.

The person who found the phone “is very definitely one of the people who is being looked at as a suspect in theft,” San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe told Wired.com Wednesday. “Assuming there’s ultimately a crime here. That’s what we’re still gauging, is this a crime, is it a theft?”

He’s already got a lawyer…good idea.
