product review: Apple In-Ear Headphones… are 2 drivers better than 1?

Apple started shipping the new In-Ear Headphones a couple of weeks ago and I finally received mine on Monday… So, after a few days with them what am I to do? Write a review of course. I know there are a few of them out there, but none of them go into details about the sound quality nor how they compare with similarly priced headphones. This is my attempt to fill that void. Let’s begin, after the jump…

snow leopard to be shown at macworld 2009?

says...
on Dec 18th, 2008 @ 2:41 pm

The Guardian is hinting that Apple’s senior vice president Phil Schiller is going to present Snow Leopard at Macworld 2009.

Apple and its partners have been privately dropping hints to developers that its upcoming release of its Mac OS X operating system, dubbed Snow Leopard, will ship earlier than expected - and it will debut two new technologies that promise to speed up software without demanding any changes to the hardware.

The first technology, Grand Central, is designed to make better use of the Intel processors that sit inside the current range of Macs. The other, OpenCL, could have a more dramatic effect on performance for some programs as it will tap into the power of graphics processors (GPUs) that now goes to waste.

So these latest rumors say it is shipping ahead of schedule, but since there was never really a public schedule I don’t get it. The only thing we’ve heard thus far is that it would be shipping in the 1st quarter of 2009, which seems very likely to hold true. If they are truly “ahead of schedule” then I would assume a late January / early February release. If not then probably won’t happen until March.

Let us know when you think it will be coming out by voting in our in our Snow Leopard Release Poll. Registered voters are also eligible to win a copy of Snow Leopard when released!

cobra starship replaces kanye on the purple nano

From the Cobra Starship MySpace Blog

“That’s right, move over Kanye, guess who just replaced you in the Nano ads!
Wanna know the crazy thing? no ONE even knew about it! not us, not FBR - nobody. which is kind of badass that apple just does what they want. we dont get paid, nor do we get free gear, or even a discount code to use on checkout. nothing. but fuck - that used to be kanye west in the purple nano - and now it’s motherfuckin COBRAS! I just think it’s fuckin rad that we’ve made enough of a niche into pop culture that someone at apple decided to associate us with the color purple. Of course all of you guys know, but it’d dope to see your fuckin record all over these stores like that. Now i just need my own Crayola Cobra Purple and my life will be complete. “

I think it’s funny that they didn’t know about it until they saw it.  Just saw these guys in concert a few weeks ago and they put on a great show. Check out their albums on iTunes, you won’t be disappointed.

I also find this extra amusing due to the recent Colbert vs Kayne ‘fued’, Operation Humble Kayne. (Colbert videos after the break, sorry for non US visitors they are Hulu vids)

apple cancels Christmas!

says...
on Dec 16th, 2008 @ 5:54 pm

If you haven’t heard yet, then I guess I will have to be the bearer of bad news… apple has cancelled Christmas. Ok, WTF am I talking about? Well apple announced today that this will be the last year at macworld and Jobs will not be the one delivering the final keynote:

CUPERTINO, California—December 16, 2008—Apple® today announced that this year is the last year the company will exhibit at Macworld Expo. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will deliver the opening keynote for this year’s Macworld Conference & Expo, and it will be Apple’s last keynote at the show. The keynote address will be held at Moscone West on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. Macworld will be held at San Francisco’s Moscone Center January 5-9, 2009.

Within a few hours of this announcement someone has put up this funny website called Apple Canceled Christmas which is basically a paraody of the apple offical annoucement:

CUPERTINO, California—December 16, 2008—Apple® today announced that this is the last year for Christmas. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing spoke at a joint press conference held with Santa Claus at the North Pole, where he announced: “Apple has been honored to work with the North Pole the last several years to make Christmas possible, however, we have decided together that this is the last year for Christmas.”

Well let’s hope this paraody doesn’t turn out to be true for apple stock holders. The stock has dropped over 5 points after hours dipping below 90 after a close around 95. At 5:55EST it has recovered a bit above 92.

OUCH! :(

my new apple headphones… they are finally here

says...
on Dec 16th, 2008 @ 4:03 pm

After waiting for a long time I finally received my new Apple In-Ear Headphones… Like anything Apple the headphones came in beautiful packaging… Along with the earbuds the content in the box included a carrying case, 3 sets of silicone ear tips (small and large in a separate carrying case and medium already inserted in the earbuds) and a set of replacement mesh caps…

Here are some pictures…

The pill like capsule is the carrying case for the extra silicone tips and the metal thing are the replacement mesh caps…

Now the question is… Are 2 drivers better than 1? Come back for a full review and comparison… I’m not an audiophile by any means, but I like music… a lot… So I’ll try to put the set through its paces and see how it fares…

pull my finger, I dare you!

on Dec 12th, 2008 @ 10:04 pm

I’m sure by now you’ve heard the story of the ‘pull my finger’ app [iTunes Link] from air-o-matic being rejected from the app store. Well apple seems to be lowering their guard on what apps can appear in their online shelves. Just the other day macenstein.com reported about the “first ‘adults only’ game” to hit iTunes.

I don’t think I can really do a review of this app considering, but for 99 cents it’s pretty amusing. I bought it to check out for the blog, but I’m pretty happy with my purchase :)

If for no other reason, you should buy this app to let apple know to keep on relaxing their restriction of apps. I think the only apps they should block are ones that can do harm to the iPhone or someone’s privacy, but otherwise let the ‘free market’ decide.

Here’s is a little clip of me playing with it so you can see for yourself if it’s your thing…
