In the latest Simpson’s Halloween special “Treehouse of Horror #19″ they do a take on “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!”. The interesting thing to me isn’t just that apple has made another product placement appearance in TV (cartoon or real), but the fact that is representing the digital age of music. From record players of the 1950s to iPod of the 2000s! This is similar to how the sony walkman was the representive of the non-digital portable music age.
Here is a Hulu clip (exclusive When Will Apple non-hulu video coming shortly)

voice commands coming to iPhone?

on Oct 9th, 2008 @ 1:00 pm
MacNN is reporting that apple has filed a patent application for voice commands for the iPhone, iPod, and apple tv. This would be a great feature to add espeically to the iPhone since many other phones that are less advanced than the iPhone have this feature. Not sure when we would see this, but it will definetley help apple stay one step of all the “iPhone killers” out there.
Voice recogniation has been around for a while now, but in the last few years they seem to be making huge advances. So it’s good to see apple, masters of the user interface, really diving into this human-machine interaction as well. With advances in multitouch screens and voice commands over the next few years this is really going to change how we interact with machines in all areas of technology…and I can’t wait!

It’s inevitable, whenever you have a device capable of displaying a pixel on a screen people will play games on them. And the iPhone and iPod Touch are no different. One of the very first app on the App Store was a game and many more have come out… And a few of these new games are right out dangerous, not necessarily to the players, but to people around and more importantly the phone or ipod itself. What games are these you ask? (continue reading…)
2nd gen iPod Touch shipped with firmware 2.1.1

Something interesting has come to our attention… Apparently the new iPod Touch has firmware 2.1.1 instead of 2.1… As you can see in a picture Dizzy took at the 5th Ave Apple Store… However the update is not available for the first gen Touch, I just tried to update one and it said that 2.1 is the most current version
So is Apple releasing the firmware at a later time? Or is that a version specific for the new iPod Touch? This is starting to get confusing. Lets hope they don’t screw up by releasing too many versions…
the problem with app approvals…

A whirlwind of protests blew over the iPhone development world this weekend when Apple rejected an app claiming it duplicated a function on one of their program. The app in question? Podcaster, which allow users to subscribe, download, stream and manage podcasts without using iTunes. And apparently Apple didn’t like that. What’s more interesting is that Podcaster wasn’t even competing directly with a first party app but only a functionality available within iTunes.
Now, this wasn’t entirely unexpected, rejecting an app that directly competes with one of their own programs. But how they apply this criteria is what doesn’t make sense. There are many apps in the store that duplicate functions built-in to the phone such as calendar, weather, stocks, among many others. So, how are they deciding what to allow and what to reject? What are the specifics? Why is Weather Bug ok while Podcaster is not? It’s frustrating for developers to work all those long hours producing a quality product just to be rejected because there were no specific rules saying that what is allowed and what is not.
Apple really needs to come up with a specific set of rules so things like this don’t happen. And they should not be afraid of apps competing with their own software. After all, progress and innovations are brought upon by competition. So unless they are afraid of progress, a little friendly competition is always good.
