The official Twitter app (iTunes) was updated today. One of the first things I noticed was the new promoted tweets showing up at the top of the tweet list. Although, this kind of sucks, they also use this new promoted tweets bar to show trending topics, you know, like #tigerblood.

What’s new in Version 3.3:

- Quick Bar, shows trends and other important things without leaving your timeline! Swipe the Quick Bar left/right to cycle through trends
- Trends based on your location
- Cleaner, redesigned Tweet compose screen.
- Autocomplete @usernames and hashtags
- Easier photo uploading
- Find friends using your phone’s contacts
- Improved DM conversation view, now works similar to SMS/Chat
- Cleaned up preferences
- Bug fixes

I’m also hoping “Bug fixes” includes a fix for all my DM randomly showing up as not read.

Thanks for the heads up @daveizzle

We love running here at When Will Apple, but I’m sure you already knew that. Chiyin and I got into running about a year and a half ago when we got our iPhone 3GS with built in Nike+iPod support. I tried the RunKeeper Free and the Adidas miCoach apps for a bit during that time, but I decided to stick with Nike+iPod. I’ve recently switched to the Nike+ GPS app and it works great, plus it still syncs with the same Nike+ website I’ve been using for over a year now.

Today RunKeeper announced their Pro version, which was selling well at $9.99, is now free through the end of January:

We know that many of you look at the New Year as a good time to get started with or improve upon your fitness routines. In an effort to encourage more people to get off the couch, and as a show of appreciation to the RunKeeper community for your terrific support for the last two and a half years, we’re making the RunKeeper Pro app free to download now through the end of January!

So if $1.99 price for the Nike+ GPS was enough of an excuse to give up on your New Year’s resolution, now you have no excuse!

Download in iTunes:

With this native app, you’ll continue to have access to all the major Google Voice features on your iPhone, like:
Cheap rates for international calls
Free text messaging to U.S. numbers
Voicemail transcription
Display your Google Voice number as caller ID when making calls

I never thought we would see the day! Glad Google is taking advantage of the new app store rules.

Just a week after receiving the original Square reader I received a new one that addresses some issues people were having using the reader with the iPhone 4. Although I didn’t experience any problem with the reader, some users were having issues, most likely because the original reader’s input jack is all metal and it was making a connection to the antenna. The new reader is a bit slimmer and the input jack ends in plastic, which is what I think will fix the problem of the metal to metal connection.

I’m glad to see a company that responds this quickly to address issues and problems their users are experiencing. Keep up the good work Square.

About a week Atomic Tom released a YouTube video of them playing on a NYC subway, with only their iPhones. They had a quick segment on E! News tonight and it turns out it was a real performance, not faked as some internet haters had suggested. It took them about a month of practice to get it just right. As to the back story of their instruments being stolen…that wasn’t true, just a clever story to go along with the music video.

Here’s the E! News clip:

(If using FireFox or IE8 (or earlier), you may need to let the entire video load before it begins playing)
