iOS 4.2 release changes some built in app process names

by Justin Horn on Nov 2nd, 2010 @ 12:44 am

Nothing big, just something I noticed. The Contacts and Maps apps are now called Contacts~iphone and Maps~iphone.

iOS 4.1                                         iOS 4.2

At first I thought it was due to the fact iOS 4.2 is the first unified release with the iPad, but why would apps like MobileMail not have the ~iphone extension? Also, not sure why it’s necessary at all since each iOS package is specific for each device. I can’t think of any better explanation, so I’m sticking with my first thought, even though I’m not sure why.

Password locked iPhone security bug fixed in iOS 4.2 beta

by Justin Horn on Oct 25th, 2010 @ 4:16 pm

The bug shown in the video below that allows someone to make non-emergency calls and view contacts (even send an email as pointed out by macstories), on a password locked iPhones is already fixed in iOS 4.2 beta. When trying to reproduce the error with iOS 4.2, the phone just locks and doesn’t allow any calls. The good thing is even though this is a pretty big hole, and attacker still can not gain access to your home screen. So I wouldn’t freak out too much, especially with the fix being released in the next month.

What’s this weird button when viewing camera roll on iOS 4.2?

by Justin Horn on Sep 17th, 2010 @ 10:13 pm

UPDATE According to Grady Haynes and Mark Gurman this is a buggy AirPlay for showing photos on Apple TV. Looking at it now, I guess I should have thought of that, but hey, I’m fighting a cold.

You see that radio looking icon in the top right? Not sure what this is, but it doesn’t show up all the time. I’ve only seen it appear on 2 occasions out of several time looking at the camera roll. When you tap the icon it dims the background and brings up 2 buttons, iPhone and Cancel. Tapping either button does nothing.

I’m hoping this could be an unfinished feature for building photo galleries directly on the iPhone, without the need to download the camera and build them on a Mac or PC. Apple did finally add the ability to create playlist on the iPhone, so it doesn’t seem that far fetched.  What do you think?
