How at&t is handling current iPhone 3G customers upgrading to iPhone 3GS

UPDATE Check out this new related post “Why your at&t upgrade eligibility date is different than your neighbors

Doing some research into the process of upgrading from your iPhone 3G to an iPhone 3GS it looks painful for those with thin wallets.

From the at&t newsroom:

PRICING
AT&T will offer iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G at a variety of attractive prices:

  • iPhone 3G S will cost $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) for new and qualifying customers.
  • iPhone 3G will cost $99 (8GB) for new and qualifying customers.
  • The 16 GB iPhone 3G will be available for $149 while supplies last.

Prices above require a 2-year service commitment and approved voice and data plan. Options are available to purchase these phones without a 2-year contract commitment.

If you want to upgrade early it will set you back $399 / $499 for the 16GB / 32GB. Many of you with iPhone plans will be eligible for full upgrade at the $299 / $399 price after you have served one year of your sentence, er… contract. I bought my iPhone 3G on July 11th, 2008 and am able to upgrade on July 12, 2009 at the fully discounted price. If you are not eligible for even the early upgrade for whatever reason or don’t want to be in a new 2 year contract the price will be $599 / $699…ouch! Oh and don’t for get at&t also charges you $18 for the privilege of updating whether you are an early upgrader, fully eligible upgrader or a no contracter. Click here to view these prices on att.com.

You can check your eligibility status in your at&t online account or on Apple’s website here.

Upgrades aside, through talking to various people, reading blogs, twitter, etc I’m getting a strong feeling that many current 3G owners aren’t all that interested in this upgrade even if they were eligible on June 19. Many seem to want more features for their hard earned dough and will patiently wait for the 4th gen iPhone, hopefully called the iPhone 4G with a 20mbit connection!

Will you be upgrading? Will you pay $499, wait for $299, or just wait till next year?
