Steve puts out the FireWire on the low end, get over it!
by Justin Horn on Oct 17th, 2008 @ 1:57 pmOk, the complaints about the copy/paste on the iPhone have now been surpased just days after the release of the new Macbooks on October 14th. I was just reading an article MacRumors titled “Steve Jobs on Lack of Firewire in MacBooks” and the comments on the forums to this article are actually more irritating than the copy paste arguments. I have a feeling the reason it’s more irritating is due to the fact that even though I don’t see this huge issue with not having copy/paste, I do see how it will be really nice to have when it’s released. I don’t think apple cut FireWire to save money or just for the hell of it. They were limited with space and choose what they thought was more important and FireWire just didn’t make the cut.
I started a poll on MacRumors Forums to get a sample of these users although I have a feeling the results will be skewed in the favor of keeping FireWire.
Coming from a PC background I have avoided all apple products until I got my first iPod as a gift about 3 years ago. Once I used it I really liked it and just ignored the small things like lack of detailed control over the device. Not sure if it’s because I’m getting older and have less time to tinker with detailed settings or just simply that I want my stuff to “just work”, but I’m now fully coming over to the darkside (apple in my case) with the purchase of my first apple computer in the form of a new macbook.
So what’s confusing me is all these long time apple fanboys/users/supporters complaining about apple doing what they ALWAYS do! These long time apple users sound like this is their first experience moving from a PC to a Mac. I find it funny the same arguments PC users have against apple fanboys are now the same ones these fanboys are complaning about.
There is nothing new and mysterious about this decision. Apple creates products that are as basic as possible, just work, and satisfy the majority of the target population. So yes we can all agree that there is a small percentage (very small I assume) of users that really want FireWire on the new $1299 notebook, but the other huge percentage of user don’t need it!
So I know you don’t want to hear it, but if you are really into video editing you shouldn’t be doing it on a MacBook with it’s lower specs, you should have a MacBook Pro! I don’t think the extra pound and inch in width / depth over the MacBook is a deal breaker. Plus if you are editing video wouldn’t you want a slightly larger screen anyway?
So please just GET OVER IT!
