Although the firmware for the iPods share a lot of the same functions as the iPhones, they aren't the same. So I could see them releasing iPods with 2.1 iPod firmware before releasing 2.1 firmware for iPhones. Another thing to think about is if this event is going to be like the iPhone announcement where they'll just announce a release day instead of releasing it that day.
