restoring my iPhone… cupertino, we have a problem
by Chiyin on Aug 4th, 2008 @ 11:29 pmok, before we go into the 2.0.1 round up I ran into a bit of a problem. as I mention in my previous post, I’ve been having problems with the MDCrashreporttool whenever I plug in my phone. and the latest update didn’t correct this error. after looking around the interweb I came across a few people with the same problem and they solved the problem with a restore. so that’s what I did and then came the fun part… don’t worry though, there’s a happy ending
the restore went without a problem… it even gave me the option to restore my data… if you ever wondered what that backup is for when you sync your phone. now you know. it restored all my settings, apps, text messages, mail accounts, etc. however, it didn’t sync music or videos, but since it’s all in my iTunes library anyways, it didn’t worry me.
what was the problem then? the problem was iTunes kept saying that the iphone was not setup. and kept showing the options to either setup the phone as new or restoring from a backup. so, what did I do? I restored from backup again of course, didn’t want to lose any of my data now, did I? of course not. another 30 mins went by and guess what? it showed me the same screen again, it was like an endless loop… so I tried one more time and got the same result.
after spending an hour and a half doing restores, I gave up I clicked on the new iphone set up button. to my surprise it didn’t wipe my data, it showed the screen where you type in the name of the phone and then just went to the regular iphone info screen… everything was good again… got the phone restored and MDCrashreporttool is not crashing anymore…
I’m not sure if that’s how it’s supposed to go or if there’s a problem with the restore code… I’m leaning towards problem with the code. so, if anyone at cupertino is reading this, we have a problem and you need you to fix it… thank you

I had the same problem when restoring the 2.0 firmware, and I eventually solved it by selecting the “Set up as a new phone” option, and restoring all my data manually, since which it’s been working perfectly. On the Apple discussion boards, it was suggested to delete all the existing iPhone backups in iTunes’ preferences, and then try to set up the phone to solve this issue.
